Leaving no doubt as to who would win the gold medal at the OSSAA Class 5A girls wrestling state championships, Ashly Johnson completed her senior season with a perfect 31-0 record to win the championship in the 100-pound classification by recording the pin over Katelyn Patterson of Cache in a time of 1:11 in the championship round match.
On her way to the gold medal finish, the Poteau senior earned pin-fall victories in all three matches and became the first girl wrestler from Poteau to win a state championship medal.
Adding to the success of the Poteau girls team, Kailey Thornton wrestled her way back through the consolation finals. After a first round setback, the Poteau junior recorded two wins by falls to capture the fourth place finish in the 145-pound division.
Also competing for the Lady Pirates at the state championship was junior Rowan Cagle (145lbs) and freshman Jadyn Harper in the 110-pound division.
The quartet of competitors earned a total of 37 points to give Poteau a sixth place finish in the Class 5A competition.
Congratulations to Ashly Johnson and the entire Poteau Wrestling Team!
