LUKE BROOKS WINS THE 4A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP MEDAL

After being denied the opportunity for a championship on the football field, Luke
Brooks made the best of his opportunities on the wrestling mat as the Poteau senior
became the first Pirate wrestler to claim an individual state wrestling championship
since 2012. As the number-2 seed at 190 pounds from the West regional, Brooks
recorded a first round 6-2 decision over Witt Edwards of Wagoner followed by a
tech-fall victory over Connor Gough of Jay, the top seeded competitor out of the 4A
east regional to earn the opportunity for a rematch against Shawn Rounsaville of
Tuttle, who defeated the Poteau senior in the west regional finals a week before.
The gold medal rematch was a top-notch championship battle with Brooks taking
the lead late in the final period to secure the 3-2 decision to claim the top spot on
the medal stand and finish his final season on the wrestling mat for the Pirates with
a 38-3 record.
The Pirates scored a total of 32.5 points with six wrestlers competing in the Class 4A
state championship meet in Oklahoma City. Poteau sophomore Camden Crew
picked up points with a fourth place medal finish while competing in the 175-pound
division. Also competing for Poteau in the boys championships was Javier Ortiz (Fr
132), Jake Fredrickson (Jr 138), Jack Egbert (Jr 144), and Jance Sommers (Sr 165).
Poteau wrestlers are coached by Matt Kennedy and Trevor Shankle.
