What does it take to thrive in both basketball and track? For Ava Zink, a junior at Poteau High School, it’s a mix of passion, perseverance, and a love for competition. “I would say the biggest thing is loving what you do,” Ava shares. “Looking forward to it at the end of the day when you’ve had a negative experience through school, practicing in the gym for a few hours, and even hooping with some of my friends.”

Ava’s motivation stems from her ability to self-reflect and push through challenges. “Getting feedback from my team, coaches, and the audience while in a game really drives me,” she says. “On a deeper level, what motivates me is myself. I know how I need my mindset to be when I’m having setbacks in whatever I’m doing.”

Her family and coaches have also been instrumental in shaping her mindset and approach to life. “My biggest influences have always been my coaches and my family,” Ava says. “They’ve taught me that the only opponent in life is myself and how I can make myself better. I’ve always had a competitive edge in my mind, and when I turn it inward, it’s only up from there.”

Teachers have played a pivotal role in Ava’s development as well, particularly Mrs. Abrams. “She has taught me when I need to focus and stay on track and when it’s okay to let my personality shine through and be goofy,” Ava says. “She’s always in the back of my mind when I know I’m getting distracted and really need to lock in, in school and during sports.”

Outside of sports, Ava is involved in FFA, where she enjoys showing her sheep, Theo. Looking ahead, she hopes to continue her connection to basketball. “My plans after high school aren’t set in stone, but I know I want to try my best to play basketball in college or somehow still be involved with sports—anything to keep me active,” Ava says.

For Ava, representing Poteau is a privilege. “I’ve always been a Pirate and love to represent my school every day on the court because of how much they’ve helped me throughout my life.”
