Confidence – a belief in oneself, the conviction that one has the ability to meet life’s
challenges and to succeed – and the willingness to act accordingly.
The dictionary’s definition has bloomed into a full color example through the efforts
of Emery Lomon, who has accepted the willingness to achieve success as a sprinter
on the girls track team at Poteau High School.
“I just picked running track my freshman year. Growing up I had always played
softball,” said Lomon who plays a vital role in the success of the Lady Pirates
4x100m relay team that won the Class 4A state championship last year in a gold
medal time of 48.65 seconds. “Coach (Matt) Aguero came to me and challenged me
to give it a try, see where this goes. Now, I’m in love with the sport.”
Focused on being first to the finish line, Emery admits that she’s driven to succeed
by her competitive spirit.
“If I’m totally honest, it eats me up to lose,” she said with a laugh while emphasizing
her most sincere thoughts. “That’s part of my approach to every day trying to get
better than the day before. I just try to stay consistent to our workout routine and
challenge myself at the same time.”

Emery runs the second leg on the 4x100m relay taking the baton from Gracie “Red”
Spradley and making the handoff to Daisee Powers to give Brooklyn Garner the final
exchange. Currently, the foursome has Class 4A’s fastest time recording four gold
medal finishes The same quartet also runs the 4x200m relay and enters the final
weeks of the spring season among the state’s five fastest times. Individually, she also
competes in the 100m and 200m sprints where she continues a diligent training
routine to move up to a higher step on the OSSAA medal stand this spring after
finishing in third place in both events as a sophomore.
“Coach has made running fun with his new “no stress” perspective. I love it.”
And by looking at her results, Emery Lomon is without question, in it to win it.
