For Poteau senior Ava Zink, basketball is more than numbers on a stat sheet—it’s about setting a tone for herself and her team. “Shining as a player is my personal goal but also being a team leader,” Zink said. “I want to be consistent in whatever I do, whether it’s making shots or hustling back on defense.”
That consistency has been built on optimism and a summer of preparation. “We are staying optimistic for the season, there are a lot of motivated and driven players this year,” she said. “Over the summer, team bonding activities helped build stronger connections. We are excited to get out there and play!”
Energy has fueled the Pirates early on. “I’ve noticed a lot of big energy from this year’s team,” Zink said. “Especially with skills and drills, everybody is encouraging each other and showing a positive attitude.”
Zink believes that momentum can only grow if the team stays unified. “Our biggest goal this year is to work as a unit,” she said. “We are learning effective communication to be more cohesive on the court.”
That cohesiveness matches their mental approach. “The team this year is mentally tough, pushing ourselves to get better and fighting through adversity,” she said. “We are determined and ready to play.”
For Zink personally, her role is flexible. “Small forward is my main position but I’m flexible and can play wherever my coach may need me,” she said.
Her focus sharpens in-game with preparation and awareness. “When I’m on the court, I scan for mismatched players. I also make sure to identify what type of defense is being ran: man or zone,” she said. “Before a big game, it’s important to get a good night’s rest, stay hydrated and fueled with good food throughout the day. I also stretch and lock in with my favorite music!”
That approach has fueled her steady production, where she averages 5 points per game, 4.2 rebounds, 1.3 assists, while shooting 39% from the field and 67% from the line.
Looking ahead, Zink hopes her impact lasts far beyond the box score. “For my legacy, I want to pass on my love for the game and inspire young players to never give up.” After graduation, she hopes to play college basketball and earn a degree in business.
