For Poteau senior Sam Tecla, football is more than just a sport—it’s the gateway to his future. “I want to receive an offer to go play football so I can continue my football career,” he said. His goals are clear, and his focus is sharp, especially heading into a pivotal senior season filled with new energy and opportunity.
A major change at Poteau this year has been the introduction of a new head coach, bringing with him a fresh approach to the program. “With a new head coach, and new way of running things, I feel like we are way more prepared this year,” Tecla said. That preparation is already showing dividends, not just in play execution, but in the team’s culture as well.
One of the biggest shifts Sam has noticed this year is how the team interacts with each other on and off the field. “Biggest improvement from the team is us involving each other more. Making sure no one is left out,” he said. “In this team, it’s a family, it’s special. Not many people know that.”
As for what the Pirates are chasing this year, Sam put it simply: “Team goals right now is to make sure we are still playing in December, and we’re doing it step by step no matter how bumpy the road is.” That long playoff road requires discipline and relentless effort—something Sam believes is the team’s biggest asset. “No one gives up, they put their heads down and get to work.”
Sam lines up as both quarterback and safety, a dual role that demands poise under pressure. “I look for mismatches and see where I have the better chance of putting points on the board,” he said. When mistakes happen, he doesn’t dwell on them. “My mindset is to always be calm. Even after I throw an interception or get burnt deep, I forget about it and go on to the next play.”
His favorite moment so far? “When we were in our third overtime against Clinton at home my freshman year in playoffs and I threw a touchdown pass to Jackson Sommer to put us ahead.”
Sam Tecla, a 5’8” senior at Poteau High School, plays football and soccer and plans to continue playing at the next level while earning a master’s degree in athletic training. His go-to hype song? “No Heart” by 21 Savage.
