Poteau High School

Poteau High School sophomore Preslie House is a member of the varsity cheer squad, varsity golf team and the FFA chapter. House first got involved in FFA while in junior high.

“I first joined FFA when I was in 8th grade. I was enrolled in our 8th grade exploration class. My Papa, Kenneth House, was an ag teacher for 30 years. He had a legendary career which led my dad, uncles, sister, and now me to be heavily involved in our own respective chapters during our high school years,” said House.

House said she enjoys being around other FFA members and showing her animals.
“The thing I love the most about being a part of the FFA chapter is getting to attend Alumni Camp every summer. It’s a conference that pushes you out of your comfort zone to help you become a better leader. I’ve also made several friends by attending this camp. I enjoy being a part of the show team through our FFA Chapter. I show sheep and goats,” said House.

A member of National Honor Society, House said she started cheering when she was in elementary school.

“I started cheering in third grade for the Poteau Bandits and I never stopped. I love being on the sidelines, Friday Nights in Costner Stadium are hard to beat,” said House.

Spending time with her teammates on the sidelines and on the golf course is something House loves to do.

“I love that we are all able to joke with each other. It makes the harder parts of practice a little easier, like when we’re getting ready for a competition. Any of us could crack a joke and give everyone just a little smile before we get back to work. I think it’s a way we can all feel together,” said House.

One person who has made a big impact in her life is her mother. Together the pair is mapping out a bright future for this Pirate.

“My mom has been the biggest influence in my life. She’s taught my sister and I how to have a good work ethic and to never expect anything to be given, only earned. I hope to one day be as successful in my own career as she is in hers. After I graduate, I plan to follow in my papa and my dad’s footsteps and attend Oklahoma State University. I’ve wanted to be a Cowgirl for as long as I can remember. I plan to study Speech Pathology, Go Pokes,” said House.

As for other students interested in FFA, House offers this sound advice.

“I would tell them to give it a chance and to try everything. There are so many opportunities that FFA gives, sometimes you must try a couple different things before you find your fit whether it be showing, skeet shooting, speeches, or being on one of the judging teams,” said House.
