VYPE caught up with Poteau athlete Emery Lomon to learn more about who she is.
VYPE: What are your personal goals for the year?
My personal goal for this year is to continue to work and get better over the off-season, when I’m not running track I’m on the softball field. My personal goal is to be a state champion in the 100 and 200, especially by my senior year.
VYPE: What is the most fun you have had in the last year?
I have had the most fun competing with this team, it’s crazy to see how far we have come and I think as the years go on we will be very tough competition. We went from 3rd, to state champions, against amazing competition at the 4a state meet. I, myself went from 8th place to 3rd place in the 100 and 200.
VYPE: Who is your favorite teacher from any grade, and why?
My favorite teacher would have to be Mrs. Rachel Hackler she is my home economics teacher, and I have known her forever. I play softball with her daughter and we have always been close as well. She has taught me in multiple grades over the years and she is always smiling and always has a good attitude. I don’t know what I would do without her, she has done so much for me over the years.
VYPE: What is your favorite athletic memory?
My favorite athletic memory would hands down have to be winning state in the 4×100. I just remember stepping off the track after running my part of the relay, and looking across the field to my anchor Brooklyn Garner crossing the line. I knew right then we had done it and the gold was ours. I just remember running across the field and giving my relay girls the biggest hug. And seeing my coach up in the stands and all of our fans and parents, they all had the biggest smiles on their faces for us. It was an amazing moment, one I will never forget.
VYPE: What teammate has left the biggest impression on you and why?
The teammate that has had the biggest impression on me would have to be Caleb Andrews he is a junior at Poteau High School. I came in my freshman year not knowing a thing, not even knowing how to come out of blocks. He trained with me and made me better. I raced him every day and all I wanted to do was beat him, he just happens to hold our school record for the 200. He made me faster, he helped me more than he could ever know. Then sophomore year came, and he ended up pulling his hamstring. He was out for weeks, I watched him come back from arguably one of the worst injuries in track and get back to running again today. He is hands down one of the hardest workers I know, and he made track fun for me, he made me enjoy it.
VYPE: What is your favorite part of being on this team?
This team is like family to me, I feel like I could talk to any of them and they would all listen and help me if I needed. When you spend every day with them, and you go on trips with them you just get closer and closer. I also love how dedicated my coach Matt Aguero is to us, he really puts everything he has into training and preparing us. Without him, I would be nowhere. He is an amazing example and a great coach.
VYPE: You can pick any place for a summer vacation. Where do you go, and who do you take with you?
If I could go anywhere on summer vacation I would go snow skiing in Colorado. And I would take my whole family, and stay in a huge cabin for a week. To me that sounds like a dream, I’m hoping I get to go for my senior trip.
VYPE: If we gave you $500 and you had to spend it in the next 24 hours, what would you spend it on?
I would probably spend it on new softball stuff, get a couple of new bats, and maybe some new equipment.
VYPE: Do you participate in any community service projects?
Yes, I am a regular volunteer at my church’s bible hour for young kids, and also the nursery.
VYPE: What Clubs or Campus groups are you involved with and why?
I have been an FCCLA officer at my school for the past 2 years.
VYPE: Are you involved in academic excellence activities such as the National Honor Society, Student Council, or other academic clubs?
Yes, I am a member of the National Honor Society.
